My Scruffy Backyard

This is how our backyard looks.

2013-08-11 18.00.16   2013-08-11 18.00.02   2013-08-11 17.59.24

After years of house “fixer-upping” exhaustion, a default for the backyard had emerged – leftover brick, on the ground, in a sort of a pattern. It was actually a vast improvement over  what was there before  – – a pit of cement, rocks and dirt with a drain pipe running along the top.  Jack-hammering some of the cement was one of many tasks that became necessary for anything to be planted there in the future.  The future has come.

I’ve tried growing plants in pots but I seem to overestimate my ability to interpret watering instructions, necessary amounts of light, etc.  I’ve had to relinquish the vision of a fertile container garden for now in the face of a greenery reality that only seems to wither, rot, die. Maintenance is not one of my strong points.

If I want to plant anything directly in the soil, it will have to be amended because the soil is like dense clay. I have been researching composters so I can amend it section-by-section.  Ideally, I’d like to plant some annual hardy grasses, colorful plants and flowering bushes so there will be something interesting to look at year-round. You know, the kind of plant items you can put in the dirt and that grow no matter what I do (or don’t do) to it.

Urbanity Artist Talk in Bushwick, Brooklyn – Great Success!

The artist talk last Saturday, July 10th, with artists of the Urbanity exhibition was a huge success.

Attendees crowded the large exhibit area of Diana H. Jones Center in Bushwick, Brooklyn to enjoy last views of Urbanity: Interpretations of the Urban Landscape and the seniors’ exhibit, Color Splash, before sold artworks and exhibits were removed later that day. Ken Kern’s article in the June Bushwick Observer prominently featured both exhibits in the color centerfold and issues were on hand for all to peruse. Plus, presenting the artist talk in English and Spanish created it’s own twist of interesting fun! The sincere joy of art fostering community and overcoming differences of language, age, race, etc. was IN THE AIR – it was a wonderful event for all. Yes, idealism lives!

Thank you to all those that attended and made the mix and mingle so enjoyable. And thanks to the Center and those related (Narcisa, Arlene, Lulu, Roxanne, Marina, Irene, Sandra & Dorothy) plus BAC (Kathleen). Diana H. Jones Center is a wonderful, receptive place for artists to share their artwork. And of course, gratitude goes to the talented, participating  artists for their contribution of artwork, time and spirit: Rhett Jones, Mark SkwarekMelissa Dyanne Bartlett, and Jillian Brall.  Photos to follow . . . .

Bushwick Open Studios ‘10 Profile: Daryl-Ann Saunders

by Mike Steyels | June 9th, 2010

Underpass, by Daryl-Ann Saunders from the Beyond The Platform series.

Daryl-Ann Saunders wants art in Bushwick to be as inclusive as possible.

“So many shows are in these cool spaces, which is great, but I thought it would be good to have one in a space with longtime roots in the community,” said the artist.

So she jumped at the chance to hold a visiting artist residency at Diana H. Jones Senior Center, which has been here for 41 years. She then planned and curated Urbanity, where she brought art to the residents of the center who previously had never heard of Bushwick Open Studios. But holding the event there also happened to provide a way for her to meet subjects for her upcoming project, Pioneers of Bushwick.

Pioneers is a project that will pair photographs of locals who’ve been here for decades with their stories of the neighborhood. The artists in the Urbanity exhibit will be giving a talk at the center on Thursday, July 10th, from 1-2pm, and it will also be translated for Spanish speakers.
